Isambard
Isambard was born in Portsmouth. He was born in 1806 and died in 1859. Isambard
loved maths. His first job was in London with his Dad. Then he went to Bristol
and won a competition to build a bridge over the river Avon. They used a basket
to get across the river Avon while they were building it. Isambard was the first
to go in the basket across the river. He got stuck half way through so he got
out and fixed the roller. Isambard and his wife, Mary had 3 children and he
loved to do magic tricks for them. He became
Chief Engineer
of The Great Western Railway in 1833. He used his walking stick to measure the
track. The first ship he built was The Great Western. It was made from wood. His
second ship was even bigger and was made of iron. You can still see it today.
His last ship was the biggest in the world at that time. In 1856 Isambard was
ill with a kidney disease. He died 3 years later in 1859.
